Spain: 'Robin Hood' Mayor Gordillo says a change is coming

Publicado el 21/03/2014
Millions of people from Spain have no dignity since they have no job, Sanchez Gordillo, Major of Marinaleda and Deputy of United Left coalition in Andalusia, said during the "dignity march" in Parla, Friday. Gordillo further forecast a radical change coming due to capitalism leaving three quarters of humanity on the edge of hunger.

Gordillo, together with thousands of people from across the Spain, is taking part is the so called "dignity march", to draw attention to the effects of government-imposed fiscal austerity on the Spanish populace. Protesters plan to converge on Madrid for a mass demonstration this Saturday against unemployment, job cuts, wage cuts, evictions and deepening poverty which is expected to attract thousands.

Gordillo came to prominence in August 2012 during the raids on supermarkets in Seville and Cadiz where he was among the people who stole food and handed out to poor families and to food banks. He became known colloquially as a "Robin Hood" figure. His town of Marinaleda has only five percent unemployment, due in large part to his socially based policies and initiatives.
